Teaching assistants (TAs) regularly take over from teachers, teaching whole classes at times. They are used to cover planned and unplanned absences (avoiding expensive and usually unknown supply staff). They ensure continuity and provide reassurance for pupils at these times. Most, although qualified as TAs, do not have formal teaching qualifications or training. TAs work with groups of children and individual pupils as required, often for a whole school year allowing teachers to deliver lessons effectively.

Discipline in schools and classes would be almost impossible without TAs.TAs can be asked to work on short-term contracts, only get paid in term-time and often lose contracts if pupils leave or change schools.

Researchers at UCL Institute for Education recently analysed data from more than 9,000 teaching and classroom assistants in schools across the UK. The disruption caused by the COVID pandemic required most TAs to support vulnerable and key worker children in school classes during lockdown to an even greater extent than before as teachers prepared and delivered remote lessons, often from home or were absent.

TAs have put their lives at risk more than any school staff during the pandemic by doing the dangerous face-to-face work. Without them schools would not have been able to open. TAs are amongst the lowest paid staff in schools.

TAs should be paid a suitable rate and offered the same conditions of employment as teachers.
