Why this petition matters

Education on Human Rights provides an essential foundation for a healthy liberal democracy. Students need an understanding of their basic rights in order to be able to orient and articulate themselves in the world. The Human Rights Act incorporates the European Convention of Human Rights into UK Statute Law, and includes fundamental liberties such as Article 11 - The Right to Freedom of Assembly and Association, which provides the basis for youth protests like School Strike for Climate.

The Human Rights Act is one of the most significant pieces of UK legislation and so it is right that young people should leave their education equipped with a firm understanding of it. A more informed population can more effectively exercise their legally protected rights and hold elected representatives to account on them, contributing to the maintenance of our democracy and empowering young people at the same time.
