As of 2019, half of sixth forms in secondary education institutions across the British Isles have been forced to remove modern foreign language A Levels from the secondary education syllabus. A poll by the Sixth Form Colleges Association identifies that 57% of sixth form leaders who participated in the survey said 38% of Spanish, 35% of French, 15% of Italian and 100% of German courses within the United Kingdom had been axed.

The survey also highlighted that 46% of school and college leaders had reduced the amount of teaching hours drastically, with 68% of participants reducing the standard 4 subject A Level offer to an inadequate 3 A Levels due to these funding cuts.

Language teaching within the United Kingdom has been an extremely important part of secondary education for the past 200 years. These budget cuts further indicate the lack of interest the British Government has in keeping language learning alive in 21st century education.

A survey by the European commission found that the British public are the worst at learning languages in Europe, with a total of 62% of people surveyed saying they did not speak another language other than English. Further removing language teaching in British schools would greatly affect the future statistics of foreign language speakers within the UK, making future job-seekers less likely to gain international employment and a sustainable career.

I'm writing this petition to the Department for Education and Damian Hinds, Secretary of State for Education, to express my dissatisfaction with the current state of language teaching due to these budget cuts, asking both the Department of Education and the British Government to reconsider allowing the decline of MFL in British education and re-analyze the distribution of funding to these core subjects.

Without language learning,we will continue to shut ourselves off from Europe and the rest of the world, diminish the importance of international relations and greatly affect the rate of international employment within the post-Brexit European job market.

Please sign this petition if you would like to join the fight and save language learning in British education.
