Better Genocide Education in the UK

Better Genocide Education in the UK
Why this petition matters
As citizens, it is unlikely many of us have experienced the harrowing effects of genocide first hand, but these needless mass killings are continuing to affect thousands of innocent people right now. With around 4 current genocides taking place that the international community is aware of, major changes need to happen in genocide education. Currently, in the UK, the only genocide education on the mainstream secondary curriculum is the Holocaust-this needs to change. It should be made clear to students that many other genocides have taken place both before and after the Holocaust and this should be achieved in changing the curriculum to incorporate a higher degree of genocide education. Teaching people about how genocides develop and how they affect people's lives is crucial in tackling the issue of genocide as a whole, with countless organisations working tirelessly to teach people on these events, both past and present, as well as how we can work together to maintain as much peace as possible. The government of the UK should join this fight against unnecessary discrimation, in it's worst form. One of the ways they can achieve this is by making it mandatory to educate teenagers who are able to learn about to Holocaust on other genocides that have occurred throughout history, in either history or PSHE/citizenship lessons. Hopefully, in signing this petition, you will help show our government we are serious about genocide education and know the value their cooperation would have. Thank you.
