Education Welfare Officers are employed by Local Authorities to support children and their families with any attendance issues, including children who are unable to attend school due to medical needs. However, EWOs often prosecute the parents of children who cannot attend school due to mental health issues such as anxiety, which are exacerbated by being in unsupportive educational provisions.

Currently, there is no independent regulatory body for EWOs. There is a nationwide problem of EWOs prosecuting parents of children with mental health issues when they are unable to attend school.

It is a waste of public funds to allow EWOs to prosecute parents for protecting their child's mental health. At the moment, EWOs can choose whether or not to accept mental health issues as illness. They are not health professionals, and should not have this right. Regulation of EWOs would prevent this misuse of authority.

I call upon the Government to establish an independent regulatory body to ensure that Education Welfare Officers abide by the law, and to protect the parents of children with additional needs from prosecution when it is not necessary, justifiable, or lawful.
