Due to the current Covid-19 situation the government has imposed many restrictions that has affected many students living in accommodation. Students have been left struggling to cope from the restrictions being enforced that have; impacted students health (students left isolated in their accommodation after being guaranteed that there would be teaching on university campuses), social life-not being able to use socializing areas (students are unable to socialise with anyone due to socializing areas being closed , again leaving the students feeling lonely). Yet, the landlords of the student accommodation fail to recognise these issues!
Tomorrow, the 4th Jan Student Finance will be released for most students. Many of these students will have to pay up to £3000 this month. For accommodation where all the facilities that were meant to be provided are not accessible. Some students have no choice but to move back home due to not being able to cope, mentally and financially. Many students are left in further dept as their Student Finance does not fully cover the cost of the accommodation, because they are unable to find work due to the circumstances.
Landlords have declined many attempts of students trying to be released their contracts. Landlords have also failed to provide alternative options to the students such as a reduction in the cost of the accommodation. We demand a reform! We want changes to be made!
We will not pay our rent this month.
