This change may be a little radical. You may find it absurd to challenge something that's been going on so many years and we've come to think of as normal.

But normal does not always mean right.

Children spend a good quarter of a day in school, and that's before you add time to sleep (a third of your day), time to eat (1/2 hours), to travel, exercize, do your hobby and have some time to unwind. Oh, and homework. The older the student, the more time they're expected to spend on prepping that extra coursework, complete research tasks that could easily be fitted into the school day, rather than cutting into the free time all people are entitled to have once they get home. Need I mention revision?

There is an enormous amount of pressure put on students to always be achieving, to push harder, even in subjects that they know full well they have no interest in. In reality, this is not in the best interests of children and young people, but for the institutions who receive a better status by having good students. Children have a right to be able to go home, not having to worry about having uncompleted tasks for the next day. In the real world of work, most people will be expected to manage their own work, rather than being told what to do, so why should school be any different?

Give young people a chance to play, muck about and be themselves, not keep reminding them that they're not good enough!
