Green belt protection for Northamptonshire to stem unfettered development and urban sprawl

Northamptonshire has absolutely no green belt protection. It's market towns - once celebrated for their charm and beauty - have been ruined and now its villages and countryside face the same fate. When Deputy Prime Minister, John Prescott marked the county out as an area for massive growth there were no barriers to development; it has even been marketed as "North Londonshire". Growth and affordable housing are essential but these must be sustainable and built where possible on brownfield sites rather than allowing the preference of developers for huge-scale, more profitable greenfield sites to dictate decisions. Creating areas of green belt might help preserve what is left of Northamptonshire's beauty - the county of "spires and squires" thanks to its ancient churches and majestic stately homes. At present, it risks turning into one giant conurbation punctuated with huge storage and transport hubs and soulless, large-scale housing estates.
