Deny the Parole of Diogo Miller Facchini
On May 28, 2012 Diogo Miller Facchini, 30, of Lorton, Virginia was drunk, speeding, in the bus lane at 54 Street and Coastal Highway, Ocean city, MD, when he hit and killed 22-year-old Matthew Jude Cheswick of Cooksville, Md.
Cheswick graduated from Glenelg High School in 2008, and was a student at Towson University. His many friends, his family and his co-workers at Merriweather Post Pavilion are all left asking why someone so young and so good could be taken so soon. He was the type of person that would do anything for anybody, then worry about himself later. Friends called him "smiles" and "cheese" because he was constantly smiling, and always full of love. Matthew was full of good morals, and judgement. In fact, just the night before, Matthew had refused to get into a car, because the person had been drinking.
Facchini, being the coward that he is, did not even stop to check on Matthew, and witnesses reported that he continued to speed away. Thankfully, these witnesses followed him, and identified him as the person who caused this. How cold of an individual are you to not even stop? Then light up a cigarette afterwards?
Facchini was arrested and charged with homicide by a motor vehicle while intoxicated, leaving the scene of a fatal collision, driving under the influence of alcohol (3 times the legal limit) , driving while impaired by alcohol and a number of other traffic related charges.
Facchini pleaded guilty September 7th to negligent homicide with a motor vehicle while under the influence of alcohol and failure to immediately stop a vehicle at the scene of an accident involving injury. Other charges against him were not prosecuted in exchange for the guilty pleas.
In November, Judge Richard Bloxom of Snow Hill Circuit Court sentenced Facchini to five years in prison for the first charge, and he gave him a suspended five year sentence on the second charge.
That brings us to today.
Today, March 28, 2013, it was found that Facchini is already eligible for parole. It has not even been 5 months since the sentencing, yet, this man could be walking the streets again soon. Please, I encourage you to sign the petition in efforts to deny the parole of Facchini, making him serve the amount of time that he deserves. This man selfishly got behind the wheel of a car while drunk, and took the life of a young man who had all the potential in the world. Please, lets make it known that Facchini deserves to be in prison for his full punishment. Allowing this man to walk free after too little a punishment, would not only be a travesty to Matt's life, but also a travesty to what Matt stood for.
