The Fairfax County and Alexandria community's four-year-long battle against a proposed data center campus, a mere 67 feet from residential areas, is reaching it's final decision.  We need your support to protect our community's safety, health, quality of life, connectedness and property. This massive electrical data center substation on the Fairfax County/Alexandria border will soon face a public hearing and a vote decision by the Fairfax County Planning Commission. If the Planning Commission denies the project, Dominion Energy can appeal to the Board of Supervisors (a drastic hail mary attempt to undermine the public land use process, shatter public trust between the Board and voters, and single out a specific developer for special treatment).  

The Plaza 500 data center project has been singled out as a prime example of poor development choices. It has been cited in the Virginia Legislature report as "too close" to residents and labeled "unusually close to residents" by the State Corporation Commission. Such proximity poses significant risks, including increased noise pollution, potential safety hazards, and a decline in local property values. Imagine looking out your window and instead of the tall trees with green leaves what you see is a massive hunk of metal and wires! That's the reality we're at risk of facing! 

The effects of noise pollution cannot be underestimated, with studies linking it to increased stress levels, sleep disturbances, and other health issues. Additionally, data centers often require large amounts of power, heightening the risk of transformers and substation malfunctions which can lead to dangerous power surges or outages.

Furthermore, property values may be adversely impacted. Research from the American Real Estate Society has shown that homes located near substations often suffer decreases in value due to perceived and actual effects on the community.

It is crucial that the Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors listen to the voices of the residents who will be most affected by this development. We respectfully urge them to prioritize the needs and safety of the community over industrial development.
