A group in Denver, Iowa intends to petition the board to unmask students in school for the remainder of the school year.  Their Facebook page spreads misinformation regarding masks and Covid and argues that wearing masks equates to child abuse. 

  The science does not support their outlandish claims.  Masks are source control; they stop droplets from the wearer, which prevents the spread of the virus.  We know masks work because we've been able to keep our students in school, even when the community spread was outrageously high and hospital beds were full. We can see the light at the end of the tunnel with vaccines on the verge of approval for kids aged 12-15 and 2-12 sometime in the fall.  Pfizer also expects to request full FDA approval (not just EUA approval) for ages 16 and up sometime this month.  NPR article regarding Pfizer vaccines

In the meantime, let's keep everyone safe in our classrooms by continuing to wear masks to help prevent the spread of Covid and the creation of variants that may outsmart the current vaccines.  All of us know someone who has been touched by Covid, and some of us know someone who has died or is suffering long-term complications.  Let's continue to do what's working, support our educators and students, and keep them safe by wearing masks for 3 more weeks.
