On June 1, 2018, at approximately 2:45 a.m. during an in-app Uber ride, driver Michael A. Hancock II was forced to fatally defend himself against his passenger. He was arrested and is being unjustly held without bond as the City of Denver investigates the incident as a first-degree murder complaint.

Here is what we know to be true about Michael Andre Hancock II:

  • Dedicated husband and Father of 2
  • 4.85 Star Uber driver for 3+ years
  • Holds active concealed handgun permit with no criminal record
  • Devout Christian
  • Active community volunteer

Family, friends and community members all stand united knowing that Michael would never harm another person unless he feared for his own safety.

Michael believed he was in imminent danger. He reacted as any law-abiding citizen would when a lesser degree of force was inadequate – in self-defense.

Colorado’s Castle Doctrine [CRS § 18-1-704.] - aka the “Make My Day Law” – should also protect people who make an earnest living as rideshare drivers.
