Mayor Chris Watts extended his term on the council due to the recent "disaster declaration" in Texas. Since that time Mayor Watts has instated an unconstitutional and unfair curfew for anyone out protesting in support of People of Color. His curfew tells people that they must leave at 9pm, which would go against the first amendment of the Bill of Rights. He also said that no bags could be on the square for fear of weapons, which is understandable, except this is Texas. What would have happened if a white supremacist showed up with a gun and the protesting populus were targeted? It is our right to protect ourselves. The police force is an extension of that. A mayor cannot have this type of authority during a disaster delclaration, there is maybe an argument if there had been a state of emergency declared by the Governor, but that didn't happen. Mayor Watts is in direct violation of our first two BIl of Rights, he needs to be removed from office, that which has already passed his term. This morning he also requested a council member recuse herself for speaking out against the local police, something that EVERY council member should be doing right now in the wake of Darius Tarver's death. I have now seen that their are droves of racists still living in Denton, TX. This is a small town and there is still some backwards thinking. I served ten years in the military and learned how to work with people from different backgrounds. It seems that our Mayor never got that opportunity. Let's give him a chance to find different work now!
