The City of Cape Town and many of its elected Councillors are failing their ratepayers. One major issue of concern is the sea wall opposite Ocean View Hotel in Strand. The wall is damaged to such a degree that the adjacent road is regularly flooded by the sea. This results in great damage to the road, damage which ratepayers will later have to pay to fix. Had temporary measures been implemented in time, then such damage would never have occurred. In addition to the obvious damage to the wall and road, the drainage system is also being damaged. Even the private property of residents is under threat, as properties in Beach Road have salt water lapping at their foundations. Vehicles using the road are directly exposed to highly corrosive salt water as they drive through it. To implement proper temporary measures would take about five months. This would buy us at least five years of time, during which a proper solution could be devised and budgeted for. In 2018 the city awarded a tender to a contractor, a tender which theoretically addressed the problem of the failing sea wall. Yet the problem remains. The fact that the city has not successfully implemented even temporary measures indicates that it has severe management issues. Clearly the City of Cape Town suffers from gross maladministration and failure to perform its mandated duties has become the accepted norm. Yet while the city is literally falling apart, Councillors continue to direct the budget towards non-essential projects. It is high time that the overpaid Cape Town City Council and the relevant politicians are held accountable for their many failures!
