We, the students at the University of West Georgia, are petitioning the University of West Georgia to replace the traditional letter grading scale with a blanket PASS/FAIL scale with the option of receiving a traditional letter grade following the events of the novel coronavirus outbreak causing the University System of Georgia to cancel in-person classes and issue online instruction only.

We understand the responsibility of the University of West Georgia to ensure that the students enrolled are able to continue their education; however, we take issue with the handling of the transition to online learning with the same expectations as traditional learning. Students who paid and expected in-person classes should not be expected to transition to online learning due to the outbreak of the COVID-19. We are demanding a blanket PASS/FAIL grading scale with the option of students choosing to receive either a PASS/FAIL grade or a traditional letter grade. We reason that the students who paid and expected in-person instruction may not have the resources to adequately continue their education online and may be ill-equipped for the remainder of the semester. A PASS/FAIL grading scale would allow  for an increase in flexibility for students, a measure of the student’s performance before the transition to online instruction, and an alleviation of undue stress for students. A PASS/FAIL grading scale would neither help nor harm a student’s GPA, meaning that it merely expects the student to continue in their performance as of March 7th, 2020, either passing or failing. The option to choose a traditional letter grade is a suitable alternative: it allows no complexities to be added in the GPA calculation of a student and will not hinder their advancement into Graduate or higher-level education.

The current method of online instruction sees some majors less equipped for this transition than others. A PASS/FAIL grading scale would act to affect all majors equally, lessening the burden of online instruction for both students. The current circumstances present undue stress for students and professors. Students have been alienated from the resources of the campus and may be ill-equipped at home. The student body of the University of West Georgia urges the University of West Georgia to consider our demands.

We are not asking for leniency; rather, we are asking for a fair measure of our performance.
