Why this petition matters

Started by Ashleigh Cornelius

This petition proposes that EVERYONE who rents, or pays for a property, should get tax relief on the primary cost of their home.

The rising cost of EVERYTHING combined with an economic structure that generally doesn't work for anyone apart from the top 1% of earners, is effecting our lives dramatically and more and more as each day passes.

With duty to pay on almost everything we use in our lives, which is already over priced, a good standard of living for everyone is danger of becoming a thing of the past. For some, this has already happened. This is not acceptable.  We all deserve to live, without the worry of being able to afford to live.

To this end, we should all be asking questions about how we can ensure a good standard of living is available - regardess of our income.  We should be fighting for fairer and less crippling ways of paying tax.  Life is for living, for making the most of our short lives and having as many happy experiences that we can.  Currently, a major portion of our population are too stressed, scared, anxious and exhausted to have those happy experiences. Many people are just having to focus on surviving - let alone living.  When did this become acceptable?  Why are we down trodden at every turn by our own government? Why are all our lives so difficult to pay for in a civilisation where we have actually designed our own economic framework?   The way the economy works is man made.  Therefore, it can absolutely be changed, by man.

EVERYONE deserves to have a home and a roof over their head.  However this is generally the biggest cost to all of us.  Rent rates are soaring and property purchases are becoming more and more unachievable every day for the general public. With price increases in everything across the board, rates are up and affordability is continually down but where does it end?

We deserve more. We deserve a fair chance of actually living our lives.

This petition proposes that EVERYONE who rents, or pays for a property, should get tax relief on the primary cost of their home and this is why:

As a business owner in the UK, the rent paid for your business premises is generally fully tax deductible, whatever type of business you have.

The same goes for interest paid on any mortgage or other loan to buy business property. Most of the actual cost of the property itself, however, will not usually attract any tax relief – with capital allowances only available on some of the fixtures, fittings and equipment within the property.

Eventually, over time, this means that renting usually produces more tax relief. On the other hand, the proportion of the cost of most business property eligible for capital allowances has increased significantly recently and you do have a valuable asset at the end of the day.

THEREFORE:

If a business owner gets tax relief on the cost of keeping a roof over their business, then the general public should get tax relief on the cost of keeping a roof over their head.

Case study example:

David Earns the average salary of £38,600 and takes home £2466 a month.

David's rent is £1200 a month.

David should be taxed on the difference between the 2 figures, meaning he is taxed, AFTER deducting the cost of his home, from his earnings.

David therefore pays tax on £1266, not the full £2466

David now takes home £352 more meaning he receieves £2818*

  • David now has more available money and can enjoy his life a little more
  • David can now afford to pay more for rent, potentially being able to rent a bigger and better house, if he so chooses.
  • David can now afford to pay more on his mortgage, potentially being able to buy a bigger and better house, if he so chooses.
  • David is now able to afford a little more for home improvements to keep his property in a nice state of repair, supporting the market as a whole.
  • David has more money to spend locally, putting cash back into the economy in real life and supporting business owners rather than just being taxed by our government.

Market improvement

The abliity to save tax on the cost of your property, will add liquidity to the property market; people will be potentially be ble to afford to move house, knowing they have the relief available to them meaning more affordability.

We already pay ridiculous amounts of Stamp Duty.  We pay ridiculously high Council Tax.  There needs to be some common sense applied.

I believe there are many common sense ways to reduce taxes and help boost the economy and the wellbeing of our population at the same time, and this is one of them.

Please sign this petition, if you agree there the way we pay tax is ancient, and out of touch with living costs.  Common sense should be applied and we should be given a fair and humane chance of living decent lives of a good standard and not be opressed at every turn by ridiculous tax regimes and antiquated goveernmental frameworks run and endorsed by people who really do not have the best interestes of the public at heart.

We need change.  This is a small proposal to make a little bit of that change.
