After Haven was implemented at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College (ABAC), reporters for The Stallion, the school newspaper, sought commentary from the head of ABAC’s police department, Chief Bryan Golden. Upon interviewing him, reporters discovered he harbors blatantly misogynistic beliefs which ultimately create an unsafe environment for women at our school and contribute to systemic structures of sexism and oppression.

Chief Golden was quoted in the October 27th, 2015 issue of The Stallion (Volume 54, #7) when interviewed about police involvement and sexual assault saying the following:

“Statutory rape is not what we typically think of when we think of rape. It’s not a girl getting her keister whooped… but it was a true blue rape.”

“I might sound insensitive, but I’m not. Most of these sexual assaults are women waking up the next morning with a guilt complex. That ain’t rape, that’s being stupid. When the dust settles, it was all consensual. It [forcible rape] doesn’t happen here. It doesn’t show up here. They’re about as much a rape as a goat roping.”

President Bridges sent out an email addressing Chief Golden’s comments the following day without explicitly referring to what he said, calling his comments “insensitive” and regrettable, but denying that they reflect in any way on the college or its police department, or that his words negate the policies and resources ABAC has in place for victims of sexual violence. There has been no mention of disciplinary action against Chief Golden.

I have no confidence in the police chief’s ability to act in the best interest when supposedly "protecting" female students. His arrogance in espousing these hurtful and altogether inaccurate assertions without fear of retribution speaks to a larger pattern in our culture where disrespect and violence toward women is tolerated.  The head of police department should be held accountable for his words.

We are petitioning for the resignation of ABAC Police Chief Golden as an initial measure to foster a safer environment on campus for women. Please take a stand and sign our petition.
