For decades, Milwaukee has been considered to be one of the most racially segregated metropolitan areas in the country by countless national and international reports. 

Why? 

A large reason for this is because the city of Milwaukee provides ZERO funding to its very own Equal Rights Commission, who is responsible for receiving local discrimination complaints, investigating, mediating, and holding hearings to determine if discrimination has occurred. Without any funding, it cannot investigate racial, gender, employment, housing discrimination, or even hate crimes.

City residents, workers, and visitors are left unprotected from hate. 

Better, Together. 

The Mayor's Administration has decided to find funding for the Office of African-American Affairs after 4 years since its creation. While funding here is critical and needed, this is for only delivering services, not enforcing civil and equal rights violations. This poses a major problem because it creates a zero-sum game; that for the Black community to succeed in Milwaukee, others have to lose.

This is wrong. We can achieve real equality, equity, and social justice outcomes together. 

Milwaukee deserves real outcomes, not tokens

The Mayor's Administration has now also proposed creating a new Office of Equity and Inclusion and wishes to create a token position of Chief Equity Officer that "will focus on equal rights and opportunity because we have to make sure more people achieve economic success." If we want real outcomes, we must fund equal protections, not create positions to appease Black and Brown communities. 

We Must Demand Change                                                                     

• WE MUST DEMAND THAT COMMON COUNCIL PROVIDE ADEQUATE FUNDING TO PROTECT CIVIL, EQUAL, & HUMAN RIGHTS!
• WE MUST DEMAND THAT THE COMMON COUNCIL ONLY APPROVE NEW POSITIONS RELATING TO EQUITY AND INCLUSION THAT WOULD REPORT DIRECTLY THE INDEPENDENT EQUAL RIGHTS COMMISSION!
