As Senator Bernie Sanders wrote in a letter sent to McDonald’s CEO Steve Easterbrook, “If McDonald’s raised the minimum wage to $15 an hour and respected the constitutional rights of your workers to form a union, it would set an example to the entire fast food industry to follow.”

McDonald’s made $5.1 billion in profit last year alone. In fact, they experienced better than expected sales and earnings. This year, they plan to spend $2.4 billion on existing locations and open 1,000 new stores. One can’t help but wonder: why don’t they spend that money on their current employees’ wellbeing?

While their career website page boasts “competitive pay” for employees, a recent study found that the average pay for a McDonald’s worker is just $9. That is not a livable wage. If Steve Easterbrook really cares about his employees as he says he does, then he would raise his company minimum wage.

Living on a minimum wage that is less than $15 an hour leaves some employees dependent on food stamps and medicaid. By definition, that makes it an unlivable wage.

Were it to raise its minimum wage to a livable rate, McDonald's would be in great company with Amazon, Target, Costco, and Disney — all of which have already increased their employee minimum wage or have pledged to do so in the coming years.

Increasing the floor pay to $15 an hour at large corporations would open up an entirely new well of possibilities for the American working class. Workers may be able to move to another city to explore more job options. It might allow workers to switch to part-time work and balance the time with educational opportunities or gaining new skills.

If McDonald’s were to raise its minimum wage to $15, it would help everyone. Employees could worry about what program to enroll in rather than how to put dinner on the table. Sign now and urge McDonald's to increase its minimum wage so its employees can not only survive but thrive.
