Demand JanSport sign the Bangladesh Safety Accord

This petition made change with 63 supporters!

On April 24th, 2013, 1,132 Bangladeshi workers were killed and over 2,500 were injured when the Rana Plaza factory collapsed. The company running the factory knew the building was structurally damaged but required workers to show up for work anyways. Such negligence is criminal, but not uncommon; over the last two years, thousands of Bangladeshi workers have been killed and injured in factory fires and collapses.

In response, labor organizations sought to have brands sign the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh, a legally binding pact that would require frequent and publicly disclosed inspections of factories, hold brands accountable for the maintenance and renovations of factory buildings, and empower workers and their unions to jointly oversee and enforce this process.

150 Brands have signed the accord including American Eagle, H&M, and adidas, but VF Corporation, owner of JanSport and VF imagewear, and affiliates, have thus far evaded responsibility for the safety of their workers. JanSport is a major apparel label here at the University of Maryland - their garments can be found in the University Book Store in STAMP Student Union where they make up a significant portion of the clothing sales.

21 Schools across the nation have already required their licensees to sign the Accord - it's time for UMD to join them.

We call on University of Maryland President Wallace Loh to 1. Suspend contracts with VF Corporation, owner of JanSport, and it's affiliates until they sign the Accord on Fire and Building Safety in Bangladesh, and 2. Require all current and future brands at the University of Maryland sign the Accord.
