Leighana M started this petition to Mayor's Office, City of Toronto (Mayor of Toronto) and

WE DEMAND IMMEDIATE AMENDMENTS TO FUNDING POLICIES FOR GRASSROOTS COMMUNITY LEADERS AND NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATIONS!

Coronavirus related funding claims to be meant for the most vulnerable, when in fact, there are countless barriers that impede small organizations from directly and tangibly impacting their communities. The most vulnerable are not being helped!

HOW MANY WE SCANDALS ARE THERE?

Newly formed non-profit organizations find themselves competing with well-established organizations for funding. Grassroots leaders are the core of community. We demand that funding be made accessible, because as it stands, there are many hurdles that impede small organizations.

"Many people want to help see their communities prosper; unfortunately, many individuals and small organizations will not even make it past the application."

Small groups and organizations that are personally invested in the community must have a voice and should have the resources to help their communities thrive.

WHEN ORGANIZATIONS WITH THE FUNDING DON'T DO THEIR JOB, WHAT HAPPENS?

The Government has repeatedly said they "Need your help".  This is due to organizations being unable to provide true information about the communities and residents they serve.  Keep in mind - the staff in these organizations get paid salaries.  The government then attempts to recruit Residents, Community Leaders, Resident groups and other Grassroots collectives with offers significantly insulting honorariums for pennies - assuming that we are uneducated, have low expectations, and will not demand more. This is the most recent example of insulting engagements with the Government.

WE ARE EDUCATED.

WE HAVE EXTREMELY HIGH EXPECTATIONS.

AND WE DEMAND CHANGES NOW!

WE DEMAND:

·   Large Not-for profit Organizations should not compete with small/new organizations for the same funding.

·   STOP Awarding contract deals by nepotism and cronyism IMMEDIATELY    (WE Scandal exposed what goes on when it comes to funding with the $900 million fiasco)

·   Foundations and Private Donors need to recognize the importance of roles that Grassroots Leaders and Community Groups play and the significant impact they have on their community through well-rounded funding and monetary compensation reflective of their work.

·   Eliminate the red tape and the prejudicial process in seeking funding.

·   The Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) needs to update and adapt to today’s post Covid-19 world. The bureaucracy that comes with applying to use charitable funds, in addition to how they give out charitable numbers, the waiting period to be given a charitable number, are barriers that stem from an out-dated system that obstructs communities rather than being a useful apparatus.

·   Trusteeship IS A SCAM. We demand it no longer be required. Individuals, groups/committees ideas and work are constantly stolen by the same agencies they are required to work with.

·   Grassroot funding or funding allocated to the most vulnerable should be given directly to local Small Groups/Organizations who are doing philanthropic, actionable work in their community.

Many activists and community groups have already learned that they cannot depend solely on their local organizations to help protect their communities. In these disastrous times, the most vulnerable are still struggling. We demand that the Government uses the funding that has already been allocated for COVID-19 relief, by bolstering organizations that directly serve their communities. Massive changes must be made to their policies and procedures in the wake of these unprecedented times.
