We want Haringey to force the developer of the housing scheme in Townsend Yard, N6 to stop work and redesign the scheme.

The Highgate Society supports new housing here but the present scheme (approved by Haringey) for seven houses is not safe as it prevents London Fire Brigade access to Shepherds Cottage. The LFB inspector said:

“Should this access be removed as planned, leaving access to the front of [Shepherd’s Cottage] only, the buildings provision for firefighting would be reduced below that of its current and / or modern standards, which will more than likely increase the risk of harm to the occupants, firefighters and destruction of the building” See here for the full LFB report

The front access is through a long narrow passageway, so rear fire access is essential.

The developer has had 9 months to submit a revised safe scheme but has not done so.  In fact he has refused even to speak to residents. Now it looks like he is laying out markings for foundations. Here are three alternatives he should be looking at. The LFB even mentions these solutions in their report.

See here for the background story including a link to a video about the development and the historic Shepherds Cottage which will be blocked off by the scheme. In this more recent video Jane Hill provides a personal commentary about the cottage and her love of its trees and setting.

For the details this is the link to the Haringey Planning portal with all the planning documentation.

Haringey has continued to grant the developer more permissions – listed building consent, construction management consent, etc

What is going on?

Haringey has the powers, authority and responsibility to demand a development which keeps the people who live in the Borough and their property safe.
