UNC has a history of backtracking on sustainability goals starting in 2010; Chancellor Throp pledged to be coal free by 2020 only to have that promise rescinded several years later. Our petition demands the current administration to not fall into this pattern by aggressively acting on Three Zeros' initiative goals, and further proving their promise by creating an in-depth road map to achieve these sustainability goals. Additionally, we ask for the integration of a fourth zero; no investment in fossil fuels.

__ Read below for a more in depth analysis of the issues at hand.

In the fall of 2016, UNC Chapel Hill launched the Three Zeros Initiative, a campus approach to move towards net zero water, waste to landfill, and greenhouse gases. Over the past five years, the  initiative has lost both momentum and transparency. The progress towards net zero water, waste to landfill, and greenhouse gas emissions goals have not been updated since 2016, 2017, and 2019, respectively. We understand that the emergence of the pandemic has created setbacks for the University, but the inherent intersection between the environmental and public health crisis makes the Three Zeros Initiative more urgent than ever before.

This past November, UNC Chief Sustainability Officer Mike Piehler established the Carolina Sustainability Council to oversee the transition to Sustainable Carolina, a new sustainability initiative which encapsulates the Three Zeros Initiative and other sustainability targets. According to the Daily Tar Heel, the council hopes to release a roadmap of the initiative in early 2021. As we transition to Sustainable Carolina, we urge the Carolina Sustainability Council to release a concrete roadmap that clearly outlines how UNC will achieve the Three Zeros and other sustainability targets by 2050.

We ask that UNC not only moves towards the existing Three Zeros but also a fourth zero—zero funds invested in fossil fuels. If UNC seeks to protect the health of their community and the planet, it must divest the $439 million dollars in student and taxpayer money currently invested in fossil fuels by the UNC Investment Fund.

We demand that Mike Piehler and the Carolina Sustainability Council commit to 1) integrating a fourth zero changing Three Zeros to Four Zeros initiative at Sustainable Carolina; 2) making a roadmap for Sustainable Carolina using measurable steps and data; and 3) communicating the status of each zero openly and consistently with faculty, students, and the community.
