Piner High School Agricultural Reform started this petition to Sonoma County

One of the most important jobs that keep our country going is farmworkers. They are the ones who pick our fruits and vegetables and make sure they are packed and ready to be sold. Yet in employment, health insurance paid sick days, and more, they are the least respected and sometimes discriminated against.

Not many people care about farmworkers' rights and for far too long it has caused their rights to be ignored. Agricultural reform calls for a re-evaluation of workers' rights, so they do not have to be overworked and not paid enough. Many employees are unpaid and this is frequently taken advantage of by employers. Agricultural employees irrespective of their position as people should have better privileges because their job is rigorous and equally essential.

The activities of the government and the environment affect agricultural workers. The shortage of funding and legislation that the state fails to enforce prevents farmworkers from having decent pay and becoming citizens. It is more difficult for them to apply for government assistance, which affects their survival and success, because of their undocumented status. The environment also plays a major role in understanding why agricultural work is a job that is left to those who need money.

Jobs in California had to go to select during the wildfires because employers were more concerned about the benefit they could lose rather than worrying about the disturbing health effects that the smoke could bring the workers. If employees get sick from the latest pandemic, they will lack money. Many live in large families because of this, it's more economically secure because everyone gets sick if one person gets sick. It's not an option for them to get sick because they need to work to get the money they really need.

In our civic action initiative, our approach is to raise awareness of the care of farmworkers. Many individuals are unaware of this subject and do not understand why it is so important. California is one of the ten states with the largest number of farmworkers and much of the Latinx population. Sonoma County is one of the biggest wine and agriculture producing counties. We want Sonoma County to ensure that Agricultural rights are being met.

Please sign the petition so we get these issues addressed.
