After my Capside project in the Colombian Amazon with the community Casilla Naira, I have witnessed an alarming loss of biodiversity. Environmental DNA (eDNA) emerges as an objective tool for the preservation of endangered environments: our oceans, forests, deserts, poles, and other threatened ecosystems.

We call on the competent authorities to demand and establish a legal framework for environmental DNA. By incorporating this approach into our legislation, we can more effectively protect our planet’s biodiversity and combat the negative impact of human activity.

According to the United Nations Report on the State of the Global Environment, more than one million species of plants and animals are currently at risk of extinction—an unprecedented rate in human history (UN Report, 2019). Environmental DNA is a scientific method that enables precise biodiversity monitoring, which is essential for our ability to protect endangered species and prevent their extinction.
