Fox News' irresponsible, clickbait reporting has claimed another victim - New York's Public Theater's free summer Shakespeare in the Park.
After deliberately vague reporting on a modern version of Shakespeare's Julius Caesar currently running in Central Park's Delacorte Theater in which Caesar has a passing resemblance to the current US president, numerous people protested the play across social media. It is evident that these people have little knowledge of Shakespeare's anti-assassination morality tale set in Roman times - they misinterpreted it as inciting violence while the play's message is the total opposite.
Amid the uproar, Delta Airlines and Bank of America have issued public statements wherein they revoke their sponsorship of the season.
Not only is freedom of expression enshrined in US law, accessing art, culture and leisure activities is a human right. By providing these free productions, anyone can attend high-quality theater. Price is not a barrier like it is in theater in the rest of the city.
Delta, Bank of America, please stand your ground in the face of uninformed protest. Reinstate your support of free theater in New York City and show that you support freedom of speech, creative expression and the education that live theater provides.
