The 50-year-old Dariyaganj book market has been closed after the orders from the Municipal Corporation. The "Kitaab Bazaar" was widely known among the people of Delhi. Situated at the Heart of Delhi, it operated as facilitating the "Minds".

“We are merely going by the Delhi High Court order. The court has declared the Netaji Subhash Marg a ‘no-squatting and no-hawking’ zone, so the book market cannot operate out of there,” Veditha Reddy, deputy commissioner of the ‘City Sadar-Paharganj’ zone of the north Delhi municipal corporation, said.

When asked why book sellers did not agree to shift to the market to the Ramlila Maidan, Varma said: “The Ramlila Maidan is a hub of festivities and rallies. As it is, we run the market only on Sundays. Even then we lose out on the two Sundays approaching Republic Day and Independence Day. At Ramlila Maidan, we will lose out on many more days of business.” (HT, 3-7-19)

There should be a reopening of the Sunday book bazaar as the college students and the book lovers could access to the books in cheaper rates. In fact, some old and rare books could be easily found there. The authority is taking away the culture and history of Reading which many of us will be unaware of. The news of shutting down the market have a serious impact on the sellers as well as buyers. And I would like to ask the regulatory that if there is a "no-hawking zone", then where is "hawking zone"? Where will the small vendors sell their things and where would the people with their petty savings go?
