Delaying/Removing the LCHS Pilot Bell Schedule

Delaying/Removing the LCHS Pilot Bell Schedule
Why this petition matters

We believe that our student body should not be subjected to a pilot bell schedule that we had no consent to participating in. For many years, the 7/8 and high school schedules have been separate from each other. The Seniors of LCHS have had their high school years (beginning of freshman year - end of junior year) ruined by the pandemic, and for their last year before graduating, they want some sort of familiarity amidst the sporadic events of COVID-19.
First, by combining all student's lunches into one period, it is asking all students to be able to have a place to eat on campus at the same time. While this is encouraging a sense of community, it also encourages students to eat on the floors or in classroom, meaning that teachers are not able to mentally refresh themselves while eating (away from students). Furthermore, the upperclassmen of the high school are not happy enjoying their lunches with the middle school because of the differences in maturity and energy. Lunch should be a time for everyone to recharge themselves before the second half of the school day, but by combining both school's lunch periods together, it is bound to cause more chaos.
Second, block days have been known to be mentally draining on La Canada's high school students. Since the average teenager's attention span is 30 minutes to an hour, students are bound to disengage in their learning more often (because of the greater amount of block days). Teachers are also given the expectation to be teaching longer classes more often, sometimes without preparation periods due to block days' skipping period schedule.
We propose to disregard this new bell schedule because of it's outweighing cons. If not, we also propose to halt the piloting of the bell schedule until the beginning of the next year. If the piloting bell schedule is voted a success then it can be implemented for the rest of the school year. That way, students who have just started to find their pace do not get tripped by a three week change in their schedules just to have it changed back right.
