Open Delaware Libraries

Wal-Marts are open, restaurants are packed, but our local libraries have only vague “target opening dates,” with no real plans for getting back to normal safely. For many of us, this is a minor inconvenience, but for some of us— those who home educate, those without access to reliable technology, or those raising toddlers/preschoolers— it has been a legitimate hardship.

As a home educator, I rely on my local library to supplement my curriculum. For a time, when my children were young, the library WAS my curriculum. Studies show that access to a wide variety of books, coupled with a pleasant experience of reading with loved ones, is the best way to encourage a love of learning in young children, which translates into better outcomes in education. A thriving local library allows everyone, regardless of socioeconomic status, to give their children this gift.

Many libraries also function as de facto community centers, hosting fitness classes, art/theatre events, and children’s activities, for free or minimal cost. Many of these same activities have re-opened in the private sector, yet the affordable public alternatives remain closed, with not even a tentative plan for re-opening.

Our state officials have allowed businesses and churches to stay open (or re-open) because of the number of people who care enough about them. Let’s show them that libraries deserve to be in the same category.
