Creativity has come under attack again over unreasonable standards. Amélie Wen Zhao was set to publish her day view novel the Blood Heir until false allegations of racism were raised. She was publishing a fantasy based young adult book. It seems bizarre that she is expected to follow the unreasonable standards of the internet outrage mob.

As the New York Times points out in their coverage of the "controversy": "Children’s book publishers have grown increasingly cautious when acquiring books that deal with charged subjects such as race, gender, sexuality and disability. Many publishers and authors now hire “sensitivity readers” who vet books and identify harmful stereotypes."

Does this not sound familiar? It sounds like censorship. Things like this are counter productive to the cause of getting more diverse stories out there.

Critics like this person from GoodReads who said: “How is nobody mentioning the anti-blackness and blatant bigotry in this book?” “This book is about slavery, a false oppression narrative that equates having legitimately dangerous magical powers that kill people with being an oppressed minority, like a person of color. This whole story is absolutely repulsive.” does not seem to understand that Zhao's book is a work of fiction. Have they never heard of the X-Men? What about the Muggle-Borns from Harry Potter? Or the enslavement of Anakin Skywalker and his mother before his Darth Vader days? This occurrence in fiction isn't a new one. Why must Zhao's book be held to a different standard? Why should the public be denied the ability to read this book? It is in no way harmful to readers since it's made very clear from the outset that this is fiction.

Individual readers should be the ones to decide if they want to read a book or not. We can't do that if a book is never released.
