We, the undersigned, ask the Dekalb County School Board to immediately reinstate the original school calendar for 2013-2014 and thereafter.

The so-called "balanced calendar" is nothing but a nightmare for working parents, will do nothing to change test scores, and will cost the cash-strapped school system more money by opening school at the hottest time of the year in Georgia. This was pushed through by the superintendent despite the objections of 60% of respondents to the county-wide survey, simply to suit her personal agenda.

If the school board is so concerned about students forgetting what they've learned too quickly, why not do away with all these pointless furlough days and little breaks throughout the school year (another nightmare for working parents?)

Moreover, the tourist industry in Georgia will suffer further economic damage with families stuck in school througout August instead of enjoying vacation time.

Did the school board even consider the needs of the students? What about high schoolers not being able to attend college summer programs that extend into August? What about the length of time kids in the block schedule can have between math and science classes that don't occur in the same semester? These are only a few considerations that must be addressed.

Please reinstate the original school calendar immediately. Thank you.
