Samantha Garden started this petition to Deidre Brock MP (Member of Parliament) and

What comes to mind when you think of fireworks? Amazing shows, bright lights, and wonderful colours! But there is much more that goes on in the background. What happens to the wildlife and livestock that are in these areas when these fireworks go off? These animals that have no escape, have nowhere to hide and have no idea how to deal with the fear. So many animals are injured or die due to trauma caused by fireworks, directly and indirectly. Fireworks gone awry can cause serious damage to these beautiful creatures, with some suffering serious and life threatening burns to the extent that they need to be put to sleep. Others suffer psychological trauma from the fear, which is irreversible and sadly, in SOME cases, can result in death.

As well as wildlife and livestock, domestic animals also suffer severe cases of shock due to fireworks. Cats and dogs have a built in flight instinct when they hear loud noises, causing increased heart rates, panting, drooling, and sometimes urinating and defecating. Certain measures need to be taken prior to public events involving fireworks to ensure that animals in the vicinity will be less affected; such as removing livestock from fields, bringing horses in to stables, turning the tv or music on at home or medicating your pet to make them relaxed etc. But what happens when people have no prior warning of fireworks shows?

Since the sale of fireworks is legal in supermarkets and shops, anyone over the age of 18 can purchase explosives! These people can then take those fireworks and ignite them wherever and whenever they like, regardless of who or what is around them. They are knowingly passing explosives into the hands of anyone, objects that can cause serious damage to both humans and animals!

I am a dog owner, and I have dealt with the trauma inflicted on animals first hand. My dog is very scared of them, but if we have enough notice we are able to make things more comfortable for her by giving her calming tablets, turning the tv up and music on. But there have been times when an unplanned event has caught us out, in the middle of an evening walk or whilst coming back from town in the middle of the day. Now, if she was off the lead she would have ran and we would have lost her, which happens to many others. Once home she then spends her nights shaking, panting, and trying to hide anywhere she can. And it’s not just personal experience, I have also read many horror stories of people with livestock and pets who have been damaged both mentally and physically by fireworks that have been lit for fun, with no concern for anything or anyone else.

With the use of this petition I am hoping to stop the sale of fireworks in shops, supermarkets and online. I believe that fireworks should only be used in public events that have been properly organised, with the necessary precautions taken to protect people and animals around the area. This petition will be passed to Deidre Brock who is the local MP in the Edinburgh area, and to Bill Tynan who is a Labour MP petitioning for stronger controls on the sale and use of fireworks.
