Reingamphi Awungshi, a 21-year-old woman from Ukhrul, Manipur, was found dead on 29 May 2013 in Delhi, India. Police were quick to label her death a suicide, but the photos of the body tell a different story.
Women in India continue to be the victims of violence at deplorable rates in a nation that labels itself as the world's largest democracy. But the fact that the victim in this particular case is a member of an ethnic and cultural minority, whose death is dismissed as a suicide, casts an even more deplorable shadow upon the Dehli Police and the country itself.
Her family and friends are owed the true measure of justice by having her death properly investigated and those responsible brought to justice.
