As college students of the Commonwealth of Kentucky, we believe in the power of higher education to both prepare us for the twenty-first century workforce and educate us to be productive citizens. Unfortunately, we believe many of our elected officials view higher education as a private endeavor rather than a public good.
For years, the Kentucky legislature has cut funding for public universities and refused to reinvest in higher education over time. Moreover, Kentucky lottery funding, which is statutorily required to fund higher education, has been diverted away from need-based scholarships (CAP and KTG).
These decisions have made it increasingly difficult for the vast majority of college students to afford college, especially those who rely on need-based financial aid. In order to reverse this trend, we, as students, are taking action.
We believe our legislature and governor should stand with students and defend higher education for a new generation. Please sign this petition to show your support.
Also, please join fellow Kentucky college students as we rally to defend higher education in the Kentucky State Capitol rotunda February 13, 2017, from 1:00 - 3:00 PM.
