Defend Academic Freedom in Turkey
Academics in Turkey have been banned from all international travel until further notice, Deans have been asked to set down, some universities have been closed, and dozens of academics have been removed from their posts in Turkish universities. This is part of the post-coup 'crack down' and constitutes an unacceptable interference with academic freedom. Restoring and respecting academic independence and freedom, and the integrity of third level education, can only strengthen Turkish democracy. Thus, we call for the immediate revocation of the travel ban, the restoration of academics to their posts, and the preservation of critical education at third level. We also express our solidarity with academic colleagues in Turkey.
- President of the Republic of Turkey
President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan
We call on you to revoke the ban on academics engaging in international travel for professional purposes. In the wake of the attempted coup in Turkey, academic opinion, independence and freedom can serve as a vital tool in further strengthening Turkish democracy and restricting academic work is a counter-productive and regressive move. As academics based all over the world, we respectfully call on you to reconsider this decision and restore academic freedom of movement.
