Concerned Residents started this petition to Deerfield

(This is not a matter about debating the adult use of marijuana.)

In 2019, Deerfield was named the safest community and 2nd best place to live in Illinois. This is a credit to our town’s culture and law enforcement – shaped by decisions made by our village government over many years. Many Deerfield residents do NOT want a retail marijuana store in town!

Deerfield is a safe and attractive place to raise families with schools of high academic caliber. With IL legalization, each municipality can choose if they want a marijuana store in their community. And, guess what? Most towns in legalized states opt out of these cash-based businesses. In Colorado, 9 of top 10 towns with the highest high school test scores chose to opt out. Many around Deerfield are too (Highland Park, Bannockburn, Libertyville, Lincolnshire, Lake Forest, Vernon Hills, Glenview, Winnetka). Regardless of your stance on marijuana, hopefully we can agree that tax revenue, largely set off by mitigation costs, is NOT worth sacrificing reputation, home sales potential, public safety and public health.

Data supports when a recreational marijuana dispensary goes in a town, youth and families pay the price. Lower perceived risk, higher access to high THC products equal greater use by youth and risk IQ loss, addiction and mental health. Anticipated tax revenue in legalized states (CO, WA, OR, AK, CA) is less than 1% of the state budget. For who Deerfield has been, is and wants to continue to be, supported by lessons learned from legalized states, tell our trustees to OPT OUT!
