Rebekah & Rachel Afulike and Morayo Adeyemi . started this petition to Deerfield Highschool Students

The presence of Officers at Deerfield highschool is necessary and important. Not only does it keep all the students at our school safe, they are a useful resource to the students on a daily basis. Some students of DHS have brought it upon themselves to use the recent events as an excuse to not only generalize the police officers at our school but the African american students as well. By claiming that the majority of the African American students in our school feel uncomfortable towards the police officers at our school, (which we as minorities believe to be false), a petition has been made to get rid of the officers at our school. Our school is a safe space, and we should not further jeopardize that safety by riding the school of one of the main resources in an effort to keep it safe. As part of the Black minority at Deerfield Highschool we wanted to inform the public that counter to the claims of the petition to get rid of police presence at Deerfield high school, not all students  of color at our school feel threatened by the officers at our school. In fact, we personally feel local authority at our highschool is important and necessary.

Racial injustice is a huge issue in America. There have been many incidents that are unjust and unnecessary towards the Black community, one of them being the  inhumane muder of George floyd. Deerfield however is a community which prides themselves on its tolerance of all its members. There has been one incident however in which the police at Deerfield highschool were violent towards a student, but that was not spontaneous and without reason. A student was accused  of harboring a gun in the school, and the student was uncooperative when approached with detainment at the deans. The accusation was made against the student by white members of the school. Any threat of gun harboring in a school should be taken very seriously. The officers actions towards the accused had not been based on his skin color, but the fact that they were informed of gun possession and his refusal to enter the principal's office willingly and respectfully. The local authority did not come to the school unannounced because there was a black male in the school, they arrived with full intention of keeping the school safe from possible gun related matters. Although no gun was found, the police, (under the circumstance they were in and the behavior of the accused), acted in a way they felt necessary to ensure the safety of the school and all the staff. We believe they would have acted the same way had it been a different student in the school, regardless of their gender or race.

The presence of Cops in highschools is not unusual. They are there to keep the students and staff safe. Many parents feel reassured knowing that when their children enter the school, they are in comfortable territory where they can aspire to succeed without fear of danger. If that presence is removed, it might open the door to possible scenarios that might not have existed before. Scenarios including drugs, alcohol, or even worse guns. The cops at our school interact when there is a cause to and are otherwise in the shadows greeting students with smiles and helping them if asked. It is wrong to group all officers together as racially unjust when the police at Deerfield is far from that. By keeping the officers at our school, we are setting an example to other schools of a system in which all parties are respectful and respected.

One positive thing that shines through the negative that has been apparent is that the media has used this time to highlight police officers who are dedicated to the people, care, and support them. This shows that not all police officers are corrupt and many are fantastic, just like the authority at our school. By removing the officers at our school, we are feeding into the negative stereotype that all officers are bad, when in fact it is the opposite. The officers at our school are the complete opposite of the man who murdered Gorge Floyd. They are a resource to each student. They care about all the members of the school regardless of race and make an effort to show students they are available to reach out  to. We hope that everyone who reads this understands our opinion and realises the importance of keeping the police officers at Deerfield highschool. Yes there is racial injustice in the world, but we feel pride knowing that the officers in our school care about each of the students and keep us all safe. It would be a pity to see them go.
