Football: Is the pain worth the game?

Football, America’s favorite pastime, is bringing more pain than happiness to athletes and families across the world. Beginning in youth football, athletes are taught to lead with a tackle with their shoulder and helmet, exposing both the ball carrier and tackler to danger.

Due to the improper tackling techniques instilled at a young age, athletes are exposed to the physicality of the game and typically this results in injuries, both cognitively and physically. During this time of brain development, children’s brains are most sensitive due to the amount of change and development taking place. These techniques follow these young athletes for the entirety of their football career, including upper division football.

NFL athletes receive more injuries and physicalities from the game than young athletes in local football clubs do, due to the improper tackling techniques taught when they were younger that followed them for the entirety of their career. Other factors contributing to their injuries and physicalities from the game are the quickening of the recovery process for injured players, and the referees allowing more physicalities to be done on the field. The NFL has been put in a spotlight due to more recent injuries and outcomes, such as suicide or more severe injuries resulting from improper tackles, by athletes or their families because they wish for other football families and athletes to not reach a point in their life where nothing more can be done for the injury. However, with correct tackling techniques and more education for coaches, athletes, and sports families in place, than many of the permanent injuries and deaths caused by the impact of the tackles can be solved.

With this petition in place, you can help bring more awareness to the impacts of improper tackling techniques and the extreme need for more education for coaches, athletes, and sports families to avoid the detrimental impacts it brings in the future with the proper teachings of how to properly place a tackle upon the opposing player.
