Why this petition matters

Started by LV Washington

Dr. Dee Dee Sharp deserves a street named for her in the City of Philadelphia!!

She is not only a  singer and a musician, she is known throughout the world as the woman who put Philadelphia on the map when her song “Mashed Potatoes” became a Billboard charted monster hit! She was the first African American female idol of the time.

Dee Dee was a favorite of Dick Clark and made numerous appearances on "American Bandstand" during the 1960s and 1970s. She was also a regular with Dick Clark's Caravan of Stars tours. She appeared on “16 Magazine” and many teen magazines of the 60s. She duetted with Chubby Checker the '60s icon on "Slow Twisting'".

She later became Dee Dee Sharp Gamble after marrying Record Mogul Kenny Gamble and they worked as a team with Leon Huff to build what is now Philadelphia International Records.

In 2021 Ms. Sharp received a Lifetime achievement Award from the “Women Songwriter’s Hall of Fame” in Washington, D.C. She has continued to perform and record actively over the years and was honored in 2001 by the Rhythm & Blues Foundation at the famed Apollo Theater in New York. The Pioneer Awards recognized those who have made a deep impact on the development of rhythm & blues.

Also in 2013 with the Sandy Hosey Lifetime Achievement Award. Her 1962 smash hit, "Gravy (For My Mashed Potatoes)," was part of the soundtrack to the 1992 movie, "Sister Act," starring Whoopi Goldberg.  She is married to attorney Bill Witherspoon.

This is only a short list of her awards and accomplishments.

We would truly appreciate you taking the time to sign this petition in order to let the City of Philadelphia know that it’s time for Dee Dee to get a street sign in her name! Many have already had the honor, it’s time for this truly deserving woman to receive hers
