Decriminalize Possession and Riding of Dirt Bikes in Baltimore

Decriminalize Possession and Riding of Dirt Bikes in Baltimore

The Issue

As a resident of Baltimore, the city globally recognized as the dirt bike capital, I am deeply concerned about our local ordinance that criminalizes the possession and riding of dirt bikes. This law is not only punitive but also disproportionately affects black and brown communities, contributing to a de jure segregational policy.

In our city, any person who violates this ordinance is subject to a fine of up to $1,000 per offense or imprisonment for up to 90 days. Meanwhile, neighboring counties accept this activity as legal. This discrepancy further exacerbates social inequality and expands the war on poverty by creating additional barriers to employment and upward mobility.

Dirt biking is more than just an activity; it's part of our cultural identity. Instead of investing in this cultural phenomenon and providing safe spaces for its practice, we are choosing to further criminalize both youth and adults who participate in it.

It's time we rethink these laws that target BIPOC communities under the guise of public safety while ignoring their socio-cultural significance. Let's work towards decriminalizing possession and riding dirt bikes in Baltimore - promoting inclusivity rather than punitive measures.

Please sign this petition if you believe in fair laws that respect all communities' rights within our city.
