Med Cannabis Does Canberra ....Twice In A Week!
Sep 18, 2019 —
To everyone who's contributed to our 'Fixing Fund' and helped get us to Canberra this week - a big thank you.
It's not just us on board with this either. Today (18th September) Olivia Newton-John, a tireless advocate herself and a Patron of UIC, is also at Parliament House with her husband John Easterling to push for much the same things that we did on Monday.
Whilst there we won much empathy for patients, and - with Olivia's added help - I'm optimistic of in-principal support of the following politicians:
Chris Bowen, Shayne Neuman, Mike Freelander, Deb O’Neill, Jacqui Lambie, Andrew Wilkie, Pauline Hansen, Malcolm Roberts, Warren Entsch and unsurprisingly Richard Di Natale who has been so strong on the creation of a patient-focused system since 2014. I think that each of these MPs left with a better understanding of just how distressed, frustrated and let down Australian patients are over access (or rather lack of it) to medicinal cannabis & cannabis products.
Our own delegation included representatives from the Country Women's Association, the NSW Nurses & Midwives Association and Chronic Pain Australia. We also spoke on behalf of Epilepsy Action Australia. In addition, we had with us a patient called Lee, a military veteran whose appalling case was yesterday covered by various news outlets. Lee’s story is so moving, and so very frustrating.
Our 'asks' were simple, as you can see from the short video we're including:
- An immediate Public Inquiry into the issue of patient access;
- An amnesty for the majority of patients unable to access their medicine legally;
- Better regulation to ensure doctors can more easily prescribe;
- Subsidies for patients who can't afford to pay for what are currently extremely expensive products.
Sadly though, the Government still needs to be moved. Greg Hunt, the Federal Health Minister declined to meet with us to discuss any of these. And only yesterday (Tuesday 17th Sept) we learned that a series of 26 Recommendations from a recent Statutory Review into the 2016 cannabis legislation won't be acted upon for at least another 12 months. How much longer must Australians tolerate a system which keeps legal medicinal cannabis out of their desperate reach?
The Coalition just isn't taking this seriously. Please help us keep the pressure up by sharing this petition - we're now over 400,000 signatures, making this one of the biggest petitions on the Change.org platform. And please visit our GoFundMe page to see what our plans are to #FixDansLaw and get medicinal cannabis moving.
Many thanks again,
Keep fighting for people power!
