Why this petition matters

Started by Sarah Joyce

Despite being a major recreational route for the area used by familes, walkers, dog walkers, joggers, runners, caregivers with prams, cyclists and groups of cyclists including young children and teen cyclists, the road has a breathtaking speed limit of 80km/h. The speed at which cars and heavy commercial vehicles pass by is astonishing.

According to the RSA, 'Speed is the biggest contributory factor in road deaths in Ireland. When you hit a pedestrian or cyclists at 50 km/h, they have a 50% chance of living. But hit them at 60 km/h, and that chance drops to just 10%.' The Road Safety Authority also states that 82% of fatalities occurred on country routes with a speed limit of 80km/h or higher.

The 80kmph speed limit needs immediate addressing as it is both dangerous and reckless.

We are petitioning Galway County Council to review the current speedlimit in light of the dangers posed to members of the public.

We appreciate your support in highlighting this issue with Galway Co. Council
