As citizens and residents of the United Kingdom, as well as members of citizens organizations from here and around the world, we wish to express our profound indignation and pain with the massacre of students, young people, women, men and families across Nicaragua that has been taking place since 18th April this year.

We express our solidarity with Nicaraguans and denounce the police repression and paramilitary violence being used to crush national, student-led protests and social movements comprising Nicaragua’s feminist, environmentalist and activist networks side by side now with the anti-canal peasant movement, neighbourhood groups, ordinary people, businesses and supportive figures from the church.

We abhor the assassination of 285 people, mostly young students, exercising their right to peaceful protest; the ‘disappearance’ of at least 156 individuals and 1500 people wounded, according to the latest report by Asociación Nicaragüense en Pro de los Derechos Humanos (ANPDH) on June 25th. We also denounce  the torture of detainees; sexual violence against women and girls; the denial of emergency medical care for the thousands who are injured; the repression of the national media and the callous misreporting of the dead and injured as delinquents. This violations of human rights have been documented by the Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) and Amnesty International.

Nicaragua has been plunged into deep crisis by the repressive Ortega - Murillo regime, whose violent response against the peaceful protest of what is now a majority of the population have come full circle from the brutal repressions of the Somoza dictatorship in that ended in 1979  with establishment of the Sandinista Popular Revolution.

The Nicaraguan government is violating the human rights of its citizens. The population demands the immediate ceasing of hostilities, the release of political prisoners, an end to threats against protesters, human rights defenders and members of social movements and civic groups across the country. They also demand the resignation of the government and top officials carrying out the assassinations, a process of transition to transparent elections and a credible process of  memory, truth and justice for the victims.

We stand with our fellow citizens in Nicaragua, we echo their demand for an immediate end to all forms of state violence and repression, a free safe and genuinely democratic society. Please sign your name in solidarity with citizens in Nicaragua.
