Continue Bow Hunting in Highland Lakes Park

Continuing to allow bow hunting in Highland Lakes will help address the densely overpopulated deer herd:reducing the number of dangerous and damaging car deer collisions (a serious problem where speeds reach 50 mph, such as Rt. 211 and Scotchtown Collabar Rd.) , improving the health of the herd, lowering the potential spread of Lyme disease to humans and CWD within the deer population. The hunt also provides outdoor recreation for our local residents, many of whom count on the annual harvest of free range, organic, low fat, local, low impact, meat for their families. The only concern I have heard voiced against this long over due hunt has been the park boundary neighbors negative feelings about cars parking where they are not used to seeing them. Perhaps we could make a few designated spots for the bow hunters that participate in this 5 week hunt. In order to allay the fears of those not familiar with the sport of bow hunting, I suggest an actuarial science approach. The fact is, your child is safer riding their bike in the park while people bow hunt than they are riding to Hannaford in your car. I am fortunate enough to have many other properties on which to hunt, and would likely not take advantage of this opportunity. But there are many local hunters that would.
