The Writing Centre at Wilfrid Laurier University is a tremendous asset to both undergraduate and graduate students and is a place where students go for help, knowing that they will receive exceptional assistance to improve their writing abilities. From a student perspective, the Writing Centre is a vehicle for student success; however, recently the Writing Centre lost one of its most valuable members: Boba Samuels.
Boba Samuels received her PhD in Education at Western University. Samuels was also the Vice-President and Program Chair at the Canadian Association for the Study of Discourse and Writing. It was through Samuels’ writing expertise and thoughtful approach to teaching that students were provided with an outstanding learning experience. In the past few days, however, Samuels’ job at Laurier was declared as “redundant.”
We write with confidence that Samuels’ job at Laurier was not redundant and served an essential function. When students at Laurier went to the Writing Centre, they knew that because of Samuels they would receive writing support from a highly qualified individual. Moreover, Samuels’ presence at the Writing Centre imbued the Writing Centre with meaning, providing students with a sense of agency by treating them as valuable contributors to the educational process. Samuels went above and beyond her responsibilities, bringing the Writing Centre to classrooms, rather than making students come to it; staying late into the early hours of the morning for events like the Long Night Against Procrastination; organizing program-specific writing assistance events, like the BU Write-a-Thon; and always encouraging students to become the best writers they can be. And what is more important in a university setting than that?
That is where we need your help. As students, faculty, and staff, this petition is our opportunity to act autonomously as agents of social justice to mandate that Samuels’ position be reinstated. The Writing Centre will not be the same without the help and guidance of Samuels. Laurier’s vision is to inspire lives, and Samuels fulfilled that mission: she inspired the lives of many Laurier students. Now it is time that we reciprocate the selflessness, passion, and support that Samuels gave her students at Laurier. It is imperative that we take action in this decision, as it will not only affect our lives, but the lives of future Laurier students as well.
We ask that the University reverse the decision that occurred on March 9th 2015 to name Boba Samuels and 21 others redundant, and that employees be returned to work immediately. We also request that a formal apology be written for the manner in which these actions were carried out.
