The Clean Power Plan sets specific guidelines to lower greenhouse gas emissions. It also works to maintain the affordability and reliability of energy in states that form plans based around the Clean Power Plan.

Recently, Donald Trump signed an executive order that calls for energy independence. This order holds the agencies responsible for regulating energy production to submit their energy plans to the White House. Their plans which will identify, and propose measures to revise or revoke the standards that were set by the Clean Power Plan. The guidelines set by the Clean Power Plan were described as barriers that prevent energy independence progress.

There is a possibility that the Clean Power Plan can be revoked completely because of this executive order. The EPA states that The Clean Power Plan simply makes sure that fossil fuel-fired power plants will operate more cleanly and efficiently, while expanding the capacity for zero- and low-emitting power sources, and reduces significant amounts of power plant carbon pollution. It also helps reduce the amount of pollutants that cause the kinds of soot and smog that are harmful to the environment, and people. Not only does it reduce the emission of pollutants, it advances clean energy innovation and development. It sets the foundation for a long-term strategy  that is needed to address the effects pollution has on the environment.
