Dear Nevada County Board of Supervisors

Would you please take a moment to read the following. First, we want to THANK YOU for all that you do for our county! All the signatures below are from the citizens who care about our planet and integrity.

I was so proud of Nevada City and Grass Valley for adopting bag ban ordinances January 1st 2015! We were one of the very first in the country. I'm wondering what happened? Many stores in our community are breaking that ordinance and have forgotten that single-use plastics bags are banned and or they need to charge the consumer .10 cents per bag. Some of them say that their plastic bags are biodegradable. Research shows that biodegradable bags create more toxins if they don't have the right conditions. Many stores are back to the same cheap plastic bags that people throw away by the thousands around the world.
These plastic bags are not necessary and are detrimental to our environment! The current repercussions for breaking this ordinance are not enough for store owners to abide to it?

I'm asking our community to urge our merchants who still use plastic bags to stop! Please ask them to make boxes available that they would otherwise have to pay someone to break down. Ask them to offer brown bags or if they have to use plastic-type bags, only offer compostable bags, which will break down and help the environment. I believe we are a powerful community that cares about our planet!
PLEASE LETS DO OUR PART FOR OUR CHILDREN, GRAND CHILDREN, AND ALL LIVING THINGS.

We use over 4 billion single-use plastic bags every year, that's over 10 million each day! Only 3% of them are currently being recycled, 200,000 bags are dumped in landfill every hour, and they take between 50 and 1000 years to degrade.

Plastic bags have many negative impacts on our planet, animals and the community.
In the marine environment, they are commonly mistaken for food like tasty jellyfish, and a great variety of animals like birds, whales, seals and turtles, can choke to death, die of starvation or infections because they have ingested plastic bags. Many critters also get entangled in plastic bags and packaging floating in the oceans, which can cause them injuries, starvation, and even death.

Plus, plastic bags are produced in factories that use energy made of gas, oil and coal. These production processes emit high amounts of dangerous greenhouse gases into our atmosphere, which contributes to global warming. Plastic bags are also made of petroleum, which is a non-renewable resource rapidly depleting which we should stop using altogether.

Thank you for your time reading this and we hope we can thank you for reducing your footprint on our beautiful planet. All Children will Thank You!

Blessings to you and your families Victoria Rasch and our Nevada County Community
