In July 2013 Kent County Council began a consultation to close 23 Sure Start Children's Centres and downgrade many more – a decision that could devastate the lives of thousands of families living in the most disadvantaged parts of Kent.
Sure Start Children's Centre were created by the Labour government to improve outcomes for young children and their families, with a particular focus on those living in the most disadvantaged areas of the UK.
Sure Start Children's Centre are there to give children a better chance in life, to provide them with essential support and to prepare them for school, no matter what their background or family circumstances.
Closing and downgrading a third of all Centres in Kent will block the path out of poverty for thousands of families and create a lost generation of children.
We call upon Kent County Council to commit to keeping every Sure Start Children's Centre open and fully funded for every family in Kent.
