Dear Capistrano Unified School District: Let's go solar!

The integration of solar energy not only yields significant and quantifiable financial benefits for our schools but also carries major environmental benefits as a bonus. Solar technology is improving constantly, with the efficiency of panels and inverters increasing dramatically as costs have simultaneously fallen over the past 4 years.

The proposed project will encompass the installation of power-generating solar arrays at local high schools, chosen as the most suitable institutions because their high electricity bills represent the biggest opportunity to create energy savings. Thus safeguarded by an independent means of energy generation, the district will not have to bear the burden of rising costs for traditional electricity--a win-win solution saving our schools money while reducing greenhouse gas emissions to the environment.

Supporting these efforts is KyotoUSA, a Berkeley based non-profit organization that has assisted school districts throughout the state in the installation of more than 26 MW of solar power at no capital cost.

Funding for the project will be sought from a number of outlets that would not disrupt the District’s General Fund, through a combination of General Obligation Bonds, Clean Renewable Energy Bonds (CREBs), Qualified Zone Academy Bonds (QZABs), California Energy Commission 0% Loans, and Prop 39 funding. Resulting financial savings can be applied to the development of our District’s educational and extracurricular programs, with the surplus used to further strengthen the District’s General Fund.

We are not the first to go solar. Success speaks for itself: local school districts who have gone solar include Irvine USD, Redondo Beach USD, Newport Mesa USD, and Los Angeles USD. We can’t save the world on our own, but we can certainly take the first steps in our very own community when the time is right to pursue solar energy.

And that time is right now.

Thank you!
