The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill's School of Media and Journalism is widely renowned as one of the best journalism schools in the country. It routinely supports the creation of great journalism in a variety of platforms, some of which has received national recognition. Graduates work at some of the greatest journalism organizations across the world including The New York Times, the Washington Post and CNN. In its classrooms, students learn about media law and The First Amendment, but the MJ School has failed to practice what they've preached.
Sinclair Broadcast group, the largest owner of TV stations by far, is engaging in journalistic malpractice, by forcing its anchors to run pro-conservative and often improperly fact-checked coverage at the threat of losing their jobs. Most recently Sinclair forced their anchors to recite a script attacking the very institution they are supposed to serve, with remarkably clear dog-whistles to President Trump's attack on negative coverage as "fake news." This script, which Deadspin compiled into a video, resembles something (like John Oliver pointed out) from a cult and has no place in a democracy.
UNC's MJ School should prioritize the free press over the will of its conservative backers and join with its sister schools to decry this blatant attack on the values it claims to hold dear.
